Sexual Content in Psychedelic Facilitation: The Conversation We're Not Having

Sexual material surfaces in psychedelic journeys with remarkable frequency. Trauma activation, desire, shame, embodied pleasure, kundalini awakening, erotic energy, questions about sexual identity and expression. This isn't unusual. It's what happens when a powerful medicine meets a body that has spent a lifetime learning to hold sexuality separately from everything else.

In South Africa, that separation runs deep. Rates of sexual trauma here are among the highest anywhere, and most of us have inherited a culture that treats sex as something to manage, hide or apologise for rather than something that belongs to us. Bring a psychedelic into that picture and the material that's been suppressed doesn't stay suppressed. It surfaces, often for the first time, in a space with no structure to navigate it.

Most of the field responds by treating sexual content as something to redirect or avoid, and global standards in psychedelic-assisted therapy hold a firm line against physical and sexual contact for good reason. But the line does not remove sexual content from the ceremony, only the framework for working with it, and people are left to meet what surfaces alone: in shame, in silence, sometimes quietly traumatised by an experience nobody was equipped to hold.

This talk argues that the absence of a framework is not neutral. It is its own risk, and closing that gap is possible without permissiveness.

• Why sexual content shows up in psychedelic work, and how South Africa's intersects with this.

• The link between sexual suppression and unprocessed trauma, and what happens when a journey finally opens that door

• Pleasure and sexual liberation as part of a human right to wholeness, not an optional extra to healing

• How this work shows up relationally: with a partner, in community, and in the trust between practitioner and client

• What an ethical, trauma-informed relationship to touch and embodiment looks like in this work

• Why silence and avoidance around sexuality creates more risk.

This is open to anyone with a personal or professional interest in the subject: psychedelic facilitators and trauma-informed practitioners, and members of the public who've encountered sexual content in their own journey work, or who simply want to think about this differently.

Speaker

Amy Nelson is a shamanic therapist, relationship coach and trainer who developed SomatoSensual Therapy: a nervous-system-based, trauma-informed approach to working with sex and desire that combines conversation, practical guidance and hands-on work in the room. Most sex education stops at mechanics and most therapy stops at talking. Her work happens in the gap between the two, with what the body is doing, what it learned to do, and what it can learn instead. She works with relationships of any structure and with individuals.

She holds a degree in applied counselling psychology, trained in shamanic practice through her mother's lineage, and came to this work through years in kink, consent and sexuality education. She has produced ASCHP certification training material for intimacy coaches, and is Head of Facilitator Education and Development at the Psychedelic Society of South Africa, where she builds training and accountability frameworks for practitioners.

Her psychedelic work draws on this same foundation. She works with individual clients and with people on initiatory paths, and her journeys are active and relational, both open and closed-eyed, and conversational and guided where need be. Sexual, therapeutic and spiritual material all surface in this work, and she works with each as it arises rather than redirecting away from it. Where sexual content surfaces, she works with it directly, incorporating consented contact within a clear ethical frame. She also co-journeys with clients, offering spiritual and energetic support and working with relationality in a shamanic context. Her approach is a considered response to a culture marked by isolation and sexual violence, grounded in a queer feminist, reindigenising perspective.
