About the event

"Harm Reduction and Integration in Psychedelic Therapies: An ethical roadmap for those who has to navigate treacherous times.”

Dr Johan Van Der Walt

~ Specialist Anaesthetist at Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town with further specialisation in the field of chronic pain.

Johan has published in the field of chronic pain and psychedelics. He has spoken in the medical community on the importance of engaging with the unfolding field of psychedelic assisted therapies and promotes an evidence based and intuitive approach to incorporating these modalities into modern medicine. Johan acknowledges that he stands on the shoulders of those who came before him and is a humble participant in the conversations around health, well-being and collective existence.  This talk will focus on giving an overview on how psychedelics for chronic pain work and offer a short history on the unfolding legal landscape since the 1970s. We will then look at harm reduction and integration as a legal and ethical framework to work with psychedelics in the current legal landscape in South Africa. We will identify potential pitfalls for healthcare workers and how to navigate through this. After the talk, we will facilitate a conversation between all attendees to share our collective wisdom and learn from each other.

We hope to see you there!
